2016 Chopper Squad vs Can Too Relays
The Chopper Squad was victorious again last night with an emphatic victory over the 2 Can Too teams, making it two years in a row. This is the 3rd year that we've done the relay, with the inaugural victory by Can Too. The event was a great opportunity for the Monthly Stachers (i.e. Chopper Squad) to meet the Can Too members and discuss how we can work together to raise awareness and funding for cancer research. We will continue to support and volunteer our time to help the squad reach the personal goals in swimming.

One Week to Go!
With one week to go we are approaching $12k! A huge thank you to all of the generous donations so far. In fact our Monthly Swim President, Peter Appleyard, has promised to donate a pair of cherised sluggos to the highest sponsor!
Mid-November Update
Thanks to some generous donations we have raised in excess of $7,500! This is very encouraging for those that have paid the price of humiliation from work colleagues, friends, and family for growing a 70's style stache or lack thereof (Weeds!). We will continue to risk divorce for a cause that is much greater, positive outcome from cancer research!
Two years ago we raised funding for prostate cancer research. The month-long mustache growing event was a huge success and it greatly lifted my father’s spirits, whom at the time was battling the later stage of prostate cancer. I sent him a group photo with a signed, ‘get well’ card from all of the monthly swimmers.
My father was truly taken aback, but he would have been even more impressed had he known the outcomes of our fundraising which resulted in more than $80,000 being awarded to prostate cancer research. The hard-working recipient of the grant was Dr Phillippa Taberlay at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, whose research consisted of “Testing novel cancer therapies and the influence of genes for early intervention in prostate cancer.”
The story didn’t end there…….
I then attended an award’s event in 2015 where Phillippa was recognised for her research contributions. I also had the opportunity to meet personally with Phillippa and tour the research facility. It was an amazing experience to see this grass roots effort come full circle and I personally thanked her on behalf of my late father and fellow swimmers.
In 2016 and beyond, we will continue to seek more positivie outcomes. Please join us in spreading the word.

Put the Razors Aside
It's late October with Halloween a few days away, but an even scarier event is on the horizon.......12+ grown men attempting to grow a mustache. Some will be more successful than others....Simon Buckington for example, but many of us will be mocked endlessly over the next month by our colleagues, friends, children, and wives! As we roll out of bed early in morning and look in the mirror at the progress (or lack thereof), we can be proud of a greater cause.
On that not, let the stache growing and fundraising begin!!
