What a wild weekend!

This was the first week since training with CanToo that our ocean swim training session had to be cancelled due to hazardous surf conditions. I think it was a lot more than that we the whole promenade is covered by sand!

Completed the Billy swim yesterday!

I had the delight to take part in the Billy swim yesterday!

I trekked to the Northern beaches via public transport with my wetsuit half done up to my waist. And was cutting it fine with my 9am start for the 500m as I missed the train taking me to Wynyard. I was going to rely on the connection service Bilgola SLSC provided from Newport beach but I'm so glad I didn't as I wouldn't have been able to find where the shuttle bus left from!

It was helpful locals sitting next to me as I sat waiting for the 199 at Mona Vale who told me how the 199 would take me there and I made it to the start with bib collected and bag dropped with 2 minutes to spare! What a warm up for my swim!

I have never done an ocean swim up at the Northern beaches prior to yesterday! The waves were quite a lot bigger than I'm ever swam in before and I associated them to the dumping waves I've seen at Coogee. I remembered what Kieran said on Saturday about smiling and jumped right in along with all other participants. There was no looking back once I was in. It was a treat with 4 goat fish greeting me as I porpoise out of the breakers.

The bouys seem to be XXL which is so helpful especially when the one at the far end was lying on its side. I enjoyed my warm up swim as it certainly helped with the 1.5km swim at 10am.

The 1.5km swim had to be brought forward by 15minutes as there was a burst water main shortly after finishing the first swim at a phenomenal rate. Run-off churned the waters a shade of dirty brown and the organisers were proactive to move  the bouys a tad to the north so the experience was enjoyable for all participating in the swim.

The first leg was much like my 500m swim. Then the next buoy took us to past the headland of North Bigola. I felt the effects of the swell that I never experienced ocean swimming before. Having a whole heap of swimmers ahead of me is always gives me the confidence to trudge on!

The next buoy was the last seaward one before we head in and it was nice to have the waves push you along. Coming in was tricky and felt like a long leg possibly because the buoys were moved earlier. That leg was hard enough with as I now know why the Aboriginal name of Belgoula - swirling waters - came about. You can certainly feel the effects of the waves coming across you and tide running out. From time to time you can feel the swell push you in and that's when I kick faster to get out of what some call the "washing machine".

Glad to finish with enough energy to run to the finish line and enjoy a cold one with CanTooers from the Mona vale pod after! I can confidently say that we are trained well for the conditions I dealt with yesterday. It was a tough one for a lot.

1km benchmark swim

We did our timed benchmark swim today. I did ok! Considering I had to pace myself a lot more with my shoulder that is on the mend. 22.36min :)

Sustaining an injury

A month into training now and I'd like to say I've slingshot my eye with the goggle turned inside out but I am sustaining in injury. I was just doing what appears to be the  usual scheme of things and got a clicking shoulder that's sore after.. I've seen the Physio and luckily there's no need for an ultrasound but I've been asked to slow things down a little. I'm still training though! :)

Training for 2km Ocean Swim Jan/Feb 2025

I'm currently training for 2025 Summer Ocean Swim 2km with the Can Too Foundation that's as committed to fighting cancer as I am.

I am part of the UNSW pod that will be swimming at 6 in the morning once a week under the good stewardship of Toni, Giselle and Michelle. You'll see us at the beach applying what we learn later in the week too.

This will set me up for the level of fitness I need to attain a Bronze Medallion and you may well find me patrolling a beach soon! I've been updating my fitness activity (swimming) that I've completed outside this program to keep me honest and you interested with my progress.

So, I'm asking for your support so that the Can Too Foundation can continue transforming lives that of cancer patients and putting together proactive programs as such to help raise the awareness needed in our community.

All you need to do is click on the link below to make a tax-deductible donation to my personal fundraising page:

All money raised with the Can Too Foundation supports community cancer prevention programs and cancer research.

Thanks for your support, together we can make a difference.

Kind Regards,
Fuji
