WEEK 7: March 31 - April 6

TUESDAY: Group pool swim. 2km in 60 minutes.Β  Lots of varied speed training. We also had a visit from the Cantoo CEO who shared his personal story of learning to swim with Cantoo, the back end of fundraising, and some very real statistics about cancer and how many of us will be affected by it.Β

THURSDAY:Β  Solo pool swim.Β  2km in 48 minutes.Β  This was a good swim - I felt strong and maybe faster?Β  I'm expecting my event time to be something around this - just a few more days to go!

SATURDAY:Β  Group ocean swim.Β  CANCELLED!Β  We had some wild weather on Friday with big winds, and over 100mm of rain in less than 24 hours so ocean conditions weren't suitable for swimming.

WEEK 6: March 24-30

TUESDAY:Β  Group pool swim - 2km in 49 min.Β Β

THURSDAY:Β  Solo pool swim - 1.9km in 49 min.Β Β

SATURDAY:Β  Group ocean swim - 1.8km over 52 minutes. ThisΒ  was an unofficial group swim because of the Easter weekend but a great opportunity to try swimming at another location.Β  We swam at Balmoral Beach where the water is always quite calm.Β  It was a beautiful day with a lot of sunlight on the water.Β  The sun made it hard to see where you were headed sometimes, but I'm happy I got this swim in!

WEEK 5: March 17 - 23

TUESDAY:Β  Group pool swim - 1.6km in 58 minutes.Β  After the regular training we finished with some open water drills- pack swimming and drag - to get used to the feeling of being close to other swimmers and pulling/being pulled by other swimmers in the water.Β

THURSDAY:Β  Solo pool swim - 2.7km in 1h 6 minutes.Β  My longest swim yet!Β  I quite honestly felt like a rock for the first half of the swim.Β  The second half was a bit better but this was a big one!Β  Β

SATURDAY:Β  Group ocean swim - 1.7km in 52 minutes.Β  Beautiful swim conditions out of Manly Beach but not my best swim.Β  We worked on swimming at different speeds through the circuit.Β  Also no scary sea life to report this time!

WEEK 4: March 10-16

TUESDAY:Β  Group pool swim - 1.3km in 31 minutes.Β  Today we did our first benchmark swim.Β  For the 2km group this was a warm up + 1km timed swim.Β  We do this benchmark once in week 4 and again in week 8 to track our progress. I unfortunately had technology problems and didn't get an accurate time so planned to do the same swim again on Thursday

THURSDAY:Β  Solo pool swim - 1.7km in 39 minutes.Β  My time for the 1km benchmark was 21 min 30 seconds.

FRIDAY:Β  Solo pool swim - 1.9km in 47 minutes.Β  I did an extra one this week!Β  I won't do it again though-- I felt the three swims in a row by the end of the weekend and not sure it was worth it.Β

SATURDAY:Β  Group ocean swim - 1.1km in 46 minutes.Β  We did a mid way start between Manly and Shelly Beach (Fairy Bower).Β  This really felt like an ocean swim!Β  There was some swell on the back side of the circuit so the coaches recommended breathing to one side to minimize the chances of getting a mouthful of water.Β  We also made an inconvenient stop in the middle of a group of jelly blubbers (there were a few stings) and saw a turtle on the way back in.Β  Overall a really nice swim!Β

WEEK 3: March 3-9

TUESDAY:Β  Group pool swim - 1.7km in 55 min.Β  Option to wear fins for this training.Β  I was really tired after this one!Β  I don't usually swim with fins and wearing them made me feel like I had to swim harder because I was going faster from the finsΒ

THURSDAY:Β  Solo pool swim - 2km in 43 (?) minutes (my watch battery died mid swim).Β  And a sunburn-- oops.

SATURDAY:Β  Group ocean swim - 1.3km over 56 minutes. Beautiful weather but we met on the harbour (wharf) side of Manly because there were bluebottles on the ocean side.Β  We did some breathing practice, a three point circuit of easy, med, fast for 20 minutes, and then two sprints in to the beach.Β  The breath work made me wonder if I've been doing something wrong all along--Β  Γ  suivre!

WEEK 2: Feb 25 - Mar 2

TUESDAY:Β  Group pool swim day -- We did 1.6km in 54 min.Β  Focus on varying speeds to train for getting in/out of the beach around the waves

THURSDAY:Β  Solo pool swim day -- My longest swim yet!Β  2.4km in 1h 6 minutes.Β  That's 96 laps in a 25m pool :D

SATURDAY:Β  Group ocean swim day -- We started on the opposite side of the bay (Shelly Beach instead of Manly Beach so no waves).Β  It was a cloudy day but we had the nicest part of the morning for the swim.Β  Calm, clear conditions and we did 2x15 minute circuits plus 2x short sprints at the end for a total of 1.5km over 47 minutes.Β  I also saw 10 little stingrays on the bottom!

WEEK 1: Feb 18-24

TUESDAY:Β  First training session!Β  We did 1km in 52 minutes in the pool.

SATURDAY:Β  First ocean swim!Β  The weather was ugly but the water was perfect- warm with soft little waves and great visibility.Β  A friendly ocean swim to start off the program.Β  Glad for the group because I wouldn't have left the house otherwise!Β  1.35km in 35 minutes

I'm supporting cancer research and prevention with Can Too Foundation.

1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This means that potentially someone we love may have to battle cancer, and that's a statistic that needs to change.

So I asked myself, "what can I do to help?" That's where the Can Too Foundation came in! Can Too provides professionally coached training programs for participants of any fitness level to run, swim and cycle their way to a healthier lifestyle and a cancer-free world.

In return, I am raising valuable funds that go towards innovation in the prevention, care, and control of cancer. Since 2005, Can Too Foundation has trained over 18,000 participants and raised over $25,000,000 to invest in over 200 one-year cancer research grants.

It would be fantastic if you could sponsor me, or even better join me in a program!

Thank you for your support!
